About the author

Carolus Hartmann was born in Lüdenscheid, Germany in 1936.

He visited the Märkisches Gymnasium (high school) in Iserlohn and took his Abitur exams at the Canadian Senior High School of the Department of National Defence Overseas in Soest. He undertook military service in the federal air force and spent some years working amongst the general staff for NATO in Fontainebleau.

He has lived in France and the Netherlands. In 1971 he studied ancient Dutch painting at the Georg-August University in Göttingen, where he had his first with engagement with glass in 1972. He worked in the pharmaceutical industry until 1984 in sales management, and was the head of a training department.

Ever since 1984 he has traded in glass from the last four centuries. He has taken part in the International Glass Symposium nationally and abroad. His first investigations for the Glasmarkenlexikon took him to the USA, France, Canada, the Czech Republic, Poland, England, the Netherlands and Spain. Since then, he has worked closely with all of the most important glass museums and private collectors worldwide.

In 1997 the lexicon, 'Glasmarkenlexikon, Signaturen, Fabrik- und Handelsmarken, 1600-1945, Europa und Nordamerika', appeared, and was looked upon as the industry standard 'must have' for glass collectors, auction houses and museums worldwide. In 2004 another publication followed: 'Das Glas im Raum Haida und Steinschönau'. At the same time, he worked on the 'Glasmarkenlexikon, Teil II', with over 8,000 artists and glass manufacturers worldwide, as well as around 9,000 marks, during the period 1945 to 2005.
